I would like to start this review on the air show by publicly thanking all of the day’s staff for there absolute and total dedication to follow through the jobs I gave them to an incredible level. For over 9 hours they slogged out the site helping, supporting and guiding the near 3500 people, so their day was one not to forget……… The Open Day staff were as follows:-
And Trevor and Ruth in the Command Tent for keeping us all in food and drink for the day….. On a very hot day indeed, the Gates opened at 10am and with all the staff in place we awaited the crowds to arrive, by 12 noon there were over 1000 people on site ready for the first display of the day. Nick Riddin who was due to fly the Isaac’s Fury let the day down by deciding not to appear, so his friend Steve Carver in the Extra 260 pulled his display time forwards to fill in the gap. As a result of Steve’s help over the last month will the flying display, Steve pulled numerous stunts and rolls behind the Windmill (with smoke) and was given the overwhelming position as one of the best display’s of the day. We had an hour wait until the Sea King from 202 Squadron at RAF Leconfield, so the ground events kept everybody busy. Tommy Tinkeboo from Pleasure Island in Cleethorpes made an appearance to entertain the children, whilst a short time after Gemma Beedham gave all on site a demonstration of her singing abilities with a song from Patsy Kline and a tribute to Abba to follow. Gemma certainly entertained and confirmed she is going to go far with here talent. The Video tent run by Tom Strangeway and Robert Goring-Shell had a few difficulties at the start of the day, but Tom and Robert got the show up and running for about 1pm, and showed video’s of the RAF for the rest of the day, and there was hardly a moment when the tent was not full. F/Lt Caley and his crew onboard the Sea King arrived at he site and showed the helicopter off to her full potential with close up passes and static hover maneuvers, were from my platform as I gave the commentary, I looked over the crowd and saw camera’s snapping shots for the whole of the 10 minute display… (any good shots then I would love to view them for our site) After the Sea King, the ground stalls continued to entertain all on site with the Lincolnshire Glider Club, Clowning Around Bouncy Castle Assault course, ASA Entertainments with various fairground rides, 100 Squadron from RAF Leeming, RAF Amature Radio Society, Charity stalls and not forgetting our Main Day Sponsor’s Hartwell Ford and their great show of cars from the world of Ford. They had over 18 enquires to follow up in the next week or so, so I hope you all who showed an interest, finished up buying you NEW DREAM CAR….. Gary Ferriman in his Pits Super Stinker arrived at 2pm in classical Aerobatic style already into his routine which amazed the crowds with superb control, which is to be expected of a man who is in the British Advanced Aerobatic Team who will compete in the World Championships in Sweden this coming August. Thanks go out to Gary and I am sure I am joined by everybody who attended the day in wishing the team all the best for Sweden. At 2.35pm the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight arrived over the windmill to give us four superb passes, with what I can only say as a golden opportunity to take pictures as she flew past us in great sweeping moves. The Tommy Tinkerboo Children’s Dance Party began at 2.40pm and over 100 children joined in the dance’s which include my good friend F/Lt Mia Armstrong from 100 Squadron, who at 33 years old, showed the kids a few good move on the dance floor.
F/Lt Matt Palmer arrived on site at precisely 3pm in his 100 Squadron Display BAE Hawk with one fly-past and a great demonstration of the power of the Hawk by climbing vertically upwards to clear the site. After the Raffle draw we got ready for the last of the aerobatic displays, and that came at 3.30pm from Justyn Gorman in his Vans RV4. Justyn flew around the site for around 8 minutes and as with Steve Carver and Gary Ferriman….. gave the crowd a superb demonstration of Aerobatics, that people have come up to me since and asked were Justyn will be displaying in the area again this year……. YOU HAVE A FAN CLUB STARTING JUSTYN !!! DC-3 Dakota ZA947 finished off the day with two great passes of the Windmill and it was then I sadly had to announce the day was coming to an end. Everybody on the day I would like to think enjoyed a full fun packed family day out, and I would like to here your comments in our guest book, and please don’t forget to say a big thank you to the Staff of the day, Display Pilots and all ground display’s…. NEXT YEARS RAF OPEN DAY IS ALREADY UNDER WAY, SO KEEP TUNED TO THIS SITE FOR ALL UPDATES AS THEY HAPPEN Hope to see you all next year… Jon R Moore – Mobile 07837 765988
